First Hmong Mennonite Church, 93 Doon Rd, Kitchener, ON
| Description | The Chin worship service is much like a traditional Mennonite worship service except there is more singing, more prayer and more sermon. Music is an important component with solos, duets, a youth choir, and congregational singing from their hymnal. A "concert of prayer" follows the sharing time with everyone praying out loud at the same time. Each sercive ends with "How Great Thou Art" sung in Chin. The Chin enjoy welcoming visitors. |
| History | The Chin people were once an independent nation living in an area that is now part of Burma (also known as Myanmar) and India. They experienced discrimiation and persecution under the Burmese rulers. Many fled the country and a group arrived in Kitchener in July 2003. They initally met as a faith community in homes, but soon began looking for a larger and more permanent place for worship. First Hmong MC offered the use of their building to the Chin Church, and a relationship developed between the two congregations - a relationship which resulted in the Chin Christian Church expressing a desire to join MCEC. Dan Yang, pastor at First Hmong, remembers how First MC in Kitchener helped the Hmong people when they were newcomers to Canada. He comments, "We learned from First Mennonite Church, who was our mother, and now Chin Christian Church is our daughter church." |
