New pastoral team for Cross Lake Mennonite Church

December 10, 2002
By Donovan Jacobs

Winnipeg, Man.—Mennonite Church (MC) Canada Native Ministry has appointed Sam Ross and Lorna McIvor Ross as the new pastoral team of the Cross Lake Mennonite Church. This role had been filled by Violet and Herman McKay since long-time leader Jeremiah Ross retired three years ago.

Lorna and Sam are originally from Cross Lake and were both baptized within the Mennonite church. Both have previous experience within the United Church and have finished a year and a half of ministerial studies at the Dr. Jessie Saulteaux Centre. Since they began their official ministry in mid-October, Sam and Lorna have seen steady attendance and participation in both Sunday school and worship services.

The Ross' have agreed to carry out the duties of ministry until September 30, 2003, at which time Native Ministry and the Ross' will evaluate the future direction and partnership of the church. During this time the Ross' will also be provided with on-going ministry education and support.

As part of Native Ministry's desire to better resource associate churches, moves have been made to provide the Mennonite Church in Cross Lake with funding for Sunday School and youth materials. Funds are also needed for building repairs and other costs.

Prayers are invited for Sam and Lorna as well as all of MC Canada’s associated Native churches. MC Canada Native Ministry's vision is to see all associated Native congregations build strong, involved faith communities. One part of achieving this is to provide the resources necessary for well-managed, sustained programming within the churches we associate with.

Currently the provision of these resources is limited. If you would like to know more about MC Canada's programming plan or would like to support an associate church through the Native Ministry budget please contact us at 1-866-888-6785 (Ext. 136).or 204-888-6781.
