Winnipeg, Man.— It doesn't happen very often that a new collection of simple songs geared to children quickly finds a home in places ranging from Sunday school to seminary.

But that is exactly what has happened with “God's Love is For Everybody,” a CD of “songs for small and tall” by Bryan Moyer Suderman.

The CD is now in its third pressing (3,000 copies total) since its release by Mennonite Church Canada just one year ago. Suderman reports that congregations, camps, seminary-level courses, elementary schools, ecumenical worship services, regional, national, and an international church assembly have all been using the music in one form or another. The music will also be used in upcoming Vacation Bible School curriculum. The project has recovered costs and is now generating income for the continued ministries of MC Canada.

“It was amazing,” says Suderman, “I was in Hall 4 in Bulawayo (at the Mennonite World Conference Assembly in Zimbabwe) when a man came up to me, said ‘Hey! Disciples-In-Training!’ and starting singing one of my songs. He's an elementary school teacher in Zimbabwe, and has been enjoying these songs with his class.”

A recent move from Winnipeg to Stouffville, Ontario, means that Suderman now sees being a music maker and a homemaker as his primary areas of ministry. His wife Julie is a full-time teacher and their son Matthew is settling into grade one.

Suderman has been continually surprised at the reception his songs are receiving in the Mennonite Church across Canada. Beyond, the music is proving helpful in variety of settings, from children's liturgies in a Catholic church in northwestern Ontario, to a monastic community in Vermont.

“But the most rewarding thing,” says Suderman, “is when a child comes up to me and says ‘I like your songs’ and they tell me which is their favourite. Or when a parent says ‘Our kids ask for your CD all the time – it's a good thing we like it as much as they do!’” The enthusiastic response has also meant that Suderman has been increasingly busy doing performances and participative concerts in schools and churches.

As to future projects, Suderman remains coy but enthusiastic. “I'm still writing songs, and having fun trying them out with different groups. Hopefully there will be another recording before too long, but right now I'm still learning where the good places are to buy bread or get a haircut,” he said, referring to his new Ontario home.
