Winnipeg, Man.— “Enough for all” is the theme that has been chosen for this summer’s annual Mennonite Church Canada assembly in Winkler, Manitoba (July 7-11). It is based on the story of Jesus feeding of the 5,000 as recorded in John 6: 1-14. The focus is on verse 11: “Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted.”

The theme was partly inspired by Mennonite World Conference in Zimbabwe in the summer of 2003. In a political and economic climate of scarcity, planners were concerned about being able to adequately feed 5,000 anticipated guests, yet they managed to feed over 7000. The sacrifices made by many could be compared to the boy with the loaves and fishes. And the blessing of Jesus multiplies the gifts in Galilee, Bulawayo and Winkler.

There will be much reflection on the theme in preparation for Winkler 2004. Ideas of enough, want, and need are some of the ways the theme can be explored in a North American context. And exploration need not be limited to physical resources; do we pray enough, or only as much as we want or need to? Is there enough forgiveness, or we do we want, need, or offer more? At Winkler 2004, we will explore our search for enough, and we will celebrate God who provides enough for all.

Registration materials, posters, and prayer cards will be distributed to congregations in April. Congregations are also encouraged to visit for current information. Churches and church leaders are invited to prepare delegates in advance. A preliminary draft of proposed actions will be finalized at the General Board meetings, April 15-17, and distributed to congregations after that.
