Winnipeg, Man.— Barbara Nkala, energetic worship leader and mistress of ceremonies at Mennonite World Conference (MWC) 14th Assembly in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (2003) visited Winnipeg Oct 1-7 to present at State of the Art of North American Mennonite History conference as well as the John and Margaret Friesen Lectures at Canadian Mennonite University. While here, she spoke to a full house at the Mennonite Heritage Centre Gallery about the MWC assembly experience one year later, noting that the event has put Bulawayo and the Brethren in Christ Church in Zimbabwe “on the map”, not only globally, but more important, regionally. Many people in the north where the church is not well known have begun inquiring and seeking to know more about the church in the South. She said, “There is no way I can forget what happened in Zimbabwe last year… lot’s of people have said ‘Thank-you’ [for coming]. Please pass it on [to churches in North America]. You have helped us so much… tell them a big, big, big thank-you.” Nkala is a Brethren in Christ Church leader, Director of the International Bible Society of Zimbabwe and Malawi, and contributor to A Global Mennonite History (Volume 1).
