WATERLOO, Ont. — Canadian Mennonites are thinking about a flu pandemic, American Mennonites want to sing.

At least, that’s one conclusion that can be drawn from sales of books from Mennonite Publishing Network (MPN) at the national assemblies of MC Canada and MC USA this summer.

The top two books sold in Saskatoon, Sask. at the MC Canada assembly were Don’t be Afraid and Beyond our Fears, both of which deal with preparing for a pandemic and other natural disasters. The top two at the MC USA convention in Columbus, Ohio were used copies—or is that pre-sung?—of Hymnal: A Worship Book, and copies of the new book Words for Worship 2.

Rounding out the top ten for Canadian sales were Jesus Matters, Walk in Peace, Reasoning Together, Dark Night, What is Iran, Plant a Seed of Peace, Sing the Journey and Sing the Story.

In the U.S., the rest of the top ten MPN books were Jesus Matters, Sing the Story, Pax Avalon, The Mennonite Handbook, Dark Night, Practices: Mennonite Worship and Witness, the Sing The Story CD and Simply in Season.

“We were pleasantly surprised by sales of the hymnal,” says MPN Executive Director Ron Rempel, noting that the books had been rented in the past for use at conventions.

“We brought 480 copies, and sold them all—and we sold another 550 copies that were left behind in our warehouse.”

Altogether, MPN sold over CDN $56,000 of books, curriculum and other items at the two national events.

“Assembly time is a great boost for us,” says Rempel. “And not just in sales—we also enjoy being able to meet people from across Canada and the U.S., and learn more about what kind of resources they’d like us to produce.”

Along with the sales of books and other items, the bookstore at Columbus also featured author signings, and a number of MPN authors presented seminars.

MPN products were also available at regional and provincial conferences across the U.S. and Canada this spring and summer.
