WATERLOO, Ont. and SCOTTDALE, Pa. – For many people, the church bulletin is more than just a place to find the service order and community news—it’s a way to enhance worship.

That’s how Lisa Showalter, Minister of Worship and Music at North Main St. Mennonite Church in Nappanee, IN, views it. For her, the bulletin is an important part of the worship experience.

"The bulletin is a vital element in worship," she says. "It helps the theme of the morning permeate the worship, and helps the service feel cohesive from beginning to end."

Showalter’s church uses bulletins from Mennonite Publishing Network (MPN) to aid their worship services.

"We really enjoy the artwork and the worship resources they provide," she adds.

For Garth Fisher, pastor of the Fiske Mennonite and Herschel Ebenfeld Mennonite churches in Saskatchewan, bulletins fill a very practical need.

"We are two small churches that cannot always easily manufacture our own resources," he says of the bulletins, which come with pre-printed front and back covers.

As for the bulletins themselves, "We find them helpful in enriching our worship together . . . we quite often use the back page resources as part of our worship."

Cynthia Linscheid, Marketing Manager for Faith & Life Resources, helps select and create bulletins for Mennonite Church Canada, Mennonite Church USA, and Church of the Brethren congregations. She’s glad to hear how they are helping churches in Canada and the U.S. to enhance their worship.

"We are careful to choose strong, vivid images and relevant reflections and worship resources that go with the Bible texts for each Sunday," she says, adding that bulletins are also available for Lent, Advent, Epiphany, communion, baptisms and funerals.

Resources in the bulletins include things such as calls to worship, confessions, prayers, readings and benedictions, all written by writers from Mennonite Church Canada and Mennonite Church USA congregations. The resources are coordinated with songs in Hymnal: A Worship Book and with resources in Leader magazine.

Bulletins with blank back covers are also available for churches that want to create their own resources, she notes.

"Worship bulletins from MPN are an affordable, reliable and convenient way for congregations to enhance their worship services in an artistic and thoughtful way," Linscheid says. "They are a beautiful and artistic way to help people to praise God."
