WATERLOO, Ont. and SCOTTDALE, Pa. — Mennonite Church USA congregations will get a free copy of the new Herald Press book Let the Children Come: Preparing Faith Communities to End Child Abuse and Neglect, thanks to a generous gift from an anonymous donor.

The donor provided the funds because of an abusive experience that happened in a church a number of years ago.

"I can't write a book on this topic," he says. "But I can help distribute this book to other churches so they can prevent what happened in my family."

In a letter that accompanies the free copies, Mennonite Church USA Executive Director Ervin Stutzman commends the book, adding that as followers of Jesus "we want [children] to come to know him through our programs and activities—and also to be safe and secure in our churches. Let the Children Come can help us make sure that's the case."

Stutzman goes on to say that he hopes churches will buy additional copies for all pastoral staff, the Christian education director, Sunday school teachers and Sunday school classes and small groups.

Let the Children Come was written by Jeanette Harder, a member of First Mennonite Church in Lincoln, Nebraska and a professor at the Grace Abbott School of Social Work at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The goal of the book is to help congregations learn about their role in ending child abuse and neglect in church, home, extended family, neighbourhoods and schools.

Let the Children Come: Preparing Faith Communities to End Child Abuse and Neglect is available from Herald Press at www.mpn.net/letthechildrencome or by calling 1-800-631-6535 (Canada), 1-800-245-7894 (U.S.). Price: $14.99 CAD/$12.99 USD.
