Election Tools for Your Church: Challenge Your Candidates |
|||||||||
Many church organizations have made resouces available to help voters make decisions about voting in the 2011 Canadian Federal Election. New material will be posted here as it becomes available. MCC Urges Canadians to "shape your world"April 14, 2011 Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Ottawa has posted a page with resources for churches and voters. Included is a PDF document suitable for bulletin insert. Federal Parties respond to letters from ChurchesApril 13, 2011 Winnipeg, Man. — As of this writing, three federal parties – the Green Party, the New Democratic Party, and the Liberal Party have responded to an elections issues letter from the Canadian Council of Churches. Their responses can be found at Election 2011 (councilofchurches.ca/en/social_justice/elections.cfm) The CCC letter seeks leader responses on issues ranging from poverty reduction to human trafficking to climate change. The CCC’s letter to party leaders and an election tool kit for churches follows: Election Tools for Your Church: Challenge Your CandidatesApril 5, 2011 WINNIPEG, Man - It’s election time in Canada once again. You might be wondering if this election really matters, or if your vote can really make a difference. That’s why it is timely to draw attention to some work of the Canadian Council of Churches and the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada – in which Mennonite Church Canada is a member - and to point you to some related work of our valued partner, Mennonite Central Committee. This election, you and your congregation are invited to engage in what we can all to together: challenge ALL electoral candidates in your respective ridings on what the church has already agreed upon: reduce poverty, counter climate change in meaningful ways, increase overseas development assistance, use non-military efforts to end war in Afghanistan, eliminate nuclear weapons, and more.
It’s hard to know if candidate responses to these challenges will help you decide how to vote, but challenging candidates on these issues helps to build awareness among political leaders that there is a compassionate church in Canada that cares about these matters. Doing so in an ongoing way – beyond just election times – is important too, and has a positive cumulative effect. Your voice is important during this window of opportunity. Thank you for using your voice to strengthen the collective impact of Mennonite Church Canada. And please do share your experiences with the Candidate Challenge by emailing office@mennonitechurch.ca or posting a short description of your candidates response to http://www.liveforpeace.org/forum/2.
