WATERLOO, Ont. and HARRISONBURG, Va.— A new Bible study guide sponsored jointly by Mennonite Women Canada and Mennonite Women USA highlights issues of justice around themes from the book of Amos.  Let Justice Roll Down: Women Engaging the World is a flexible 12-session study by Rebecca Seiling of Waterloo, Ont., guiding participants through Amos with suggestions for reflection and active response.  Topics include the prophetic voice, the church’s witness in the world, consumption and generosity, and the relationship between worship and justice.

“Amos shakes, disturbs, and pushes our comfort zones,” writes Seiling in the study’s preface. “If you are content with the life you’re living, do not read Amos. If we follow Amos’s example, we will speak out against the injustices in our time, listen to an outsider’s critiques, confront the powers that be, and become ministers of imagination—imagining and working toward a new world that is aligned with God’s purposes.”

Mennonite Women Canada and Mennonite Women USA coordinate to produce a new Bible study each year. The studies are published through MennoMedia, the publishing ministry for the two national churches.

Project editor Patricia Burdette says the groups determined they wanted a guide that related to a specific book of the Bible this year, rather than a topic with scriptures from many books of the Bible. “We liked the idea of a study on one of the minor prophets, and Rebecca Seiling selected Amos. She also taught the book of Amos to an adult Sunday school class as she was writing the guide,” says Burdette.

Let Justice Roll Down joins a collection of studies geared to women’s groups and individuals, including recent titles Wonderfully Made: Women, Faith, and Self-Care, and Seek Peace and Pursue It: Women, Faith, and Family Care.

Berni Kaufman, Mennonite Women USA executive assistant, hears from participants and leaders who enjoy using the studies.

“I’ve heard appreciation for these Bible study guides, from both groups and individuals,” says Kaufman. “People have affirmed the use of visuals to introduce each lesson, the thought-provoking questions and insights to scripture offered in the sessions, and the concrete suggestions given for applying the scripture to everyday life.”
