WATERLOO, Ont., HARRISONBURG, Va. and ELGIN, Ill.—MennoMedia and Brethren Press have hired Rose Stutzman and Rebecca Seiling to direct and develop the next generation of Sunday school curriculum for children and youth. This new, yet-to-be-named curriculum will succeed Gather ’Round: Hearing and Sharing God’s Good News, which is scheduled to conclude after the summer of 2014.

“We want to build on the success of our Gather ’Round curriculum while also recognizing new trends in Sunday school and faith formation. We are thinking carefully about how to engage children, youth, and their families in knowing the biblical story in fresh ways,” says Russ Eanes, executive director of MennoMedia.

“Teaching children and youth is one of the most important ministries of the church,” says Wendy McFadden, publisher of Brethren Press. “We are passionate about providing high-quality resources that help congregations and families form faith.”

As project director, Rose Stutzman will oversee the new curriculum through its creative design, implementation, and duration. She has served as Gather ’Round editor since 2006 and will continue in that role part-time for the next year. Rebecca Seiling, who has served as a Gather ’Round contract writer and editor, is project developer, a one-year position to develop the new curriculum.

“I envision this new curriculum as a treasure trove of ideas and resources to engage with the biblical story and encourage nurturing, faith-forming relationships—both in the family and in the gathered church,” says Seiling.

In addition to her Gather ’Round writing, Rebecca Seiling is the author of the newly released Mennonite Women Bible study Let Justice Roll Down, as well as the Herald Press books Plant a Seed of Peace and Don’t Be Afraid. Seiling previously was head teacher at Willowgrove Primary School in Stouffville, Ontario. She lives in Waterloo, Ontario, with her family.

Prior to her work with Gather ’Round, Rose and her husband, Mervin, served with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in Kenya, where she was an elementary school teacher. Additionally, she worked at Mennonite Publishing House from 1995–2002 as an editor and director of Faith and Life Resources.  Stutzman lives in Goshen, Indiana, with her family.

“I take seriously Jesus' words about welcoming children and becoming like children to enter the kingdom of God,” says Stutzman. “We are on a faith journey together. I am excited to partner with churches and families to nurture the spiritual formation of children and youth so that together we may grow in knowing and loving God.”

MennoMedia, the publishing agency serving Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite Church Canada, and Brethren Press, publishing house of the Church of the Brethren, have been publishing curriculum together for years, earning especially high marks for both Jubilee: God’s Good News, a Sunday school curriculum for children, and Gather ’Round: Hearing and Sharing God’s Good News
