Waterloo, Ont. and Harrisonburg, Va.—Two new CDs from MennoMedia celebrate 60 years of Mennonite Hour a cappella music and recordings: 18 Most Loved Hymns and A Cappella Christmas: Second Edition.

In July of 1952, The Mennonite Hour Chorus was initially formed to provide music for the Mennonite Hour radio program launched in 1951. Though the long-running radio program went off the air in 1978, a cappella music continues to be popular in North American culture, including Mennonite a cappella singing and recordings, averaging sales of 2,100 CDs a year from 1999 through 2010.

18 Most Loved Hymns, by various Mennonite Hour choral groups comes from an earlier LP (long-playing album). The “most loved” hymns reflect a 1961 poll of radio listeners regarding their favorite hymns. Over 5,000 persons responded and more than 12,000 copies of the resulting LP of the 18 top hymns were sold at the time.

The top ten hymns on the list (and in this collection) are: “How Great Thou Art,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” “My God and I,” “The Love of God,” “In Times Like These,” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” “Amazing Grace,” “Rock of Ages,” and “In the Garden.”

A Cappella Christmas: Second Edition includes seven new selections not included on an earlier CD of the same name. This collection includes many traditional Christmas carols and favorites, along with the oft-requested “The Star and the Wise Men,” a men’s chorus anthem with an ambitious alto obligato sung by Audrey Shank. It also includes an original song written and composed by former Mennonite Hour speaker David Augsburger, “Christ Came from Realms of Light.” This new collection was selected by John Horst, one of the choir/quartet members for a number of years.

The CDs sell for $12.95 each and MennoMedia has 25 other music CDs available (some for $15.99 each). For a complete list of CDs and the songs available on each one, go to or call 1-800-631-6535 (Canada).
