Historical note

The First Mennonite Church was founded in 1947 in Calgary, Alberta. It had begun as a mission outreach of the conference in 1944. They began meeting in rented facilities and purchased their own meeting house in 1945. There were 28 charter members in 1947. In 1948 a girl's home was established in the home of the pastor, which continued to operate until 1955. Also in 1955 the congregation became independent. There were 166 members in 1955. In 1957 they built a new meeting house and it was expanded in 1966. In 1966 there were 200 members. In 1973 a senior citizen building was built. In 1977 the membership was 294. In 1986 it reached 339. In 2000 the membership stood at 244. The leaders of the congregation were: J. J. This fonds contains bulletins (1963-2002), annual reports (1956-1993), programmes (1963-1987), minutes (1972-1983), directories (1975-1996), congregational chronicle (1975), correspondence (1987), and newsletters (1989-2001). The records pertain to the founding and development of the Mennonite congregation in Calgary, Alberta. They document some of the leaders and participants in the congregation.
