Historical note

The congregation began services in 1956, and formally organized in 1961. The first building was occupied in 1959, with a subsequent building program in 1966. The congregation was first called North Hill Mennonite Mission. It was renamed Foothills Mennonite in 1966 when a new church building was constructed. The membership was 106 in 1966. In the late 1970s the congregation decided to begin another Mennonite congregation in Calgary. From this effort the Calgary Mennonite Fellowship emerged in 1978. In 1979 the membership was 225. In 1989 the membership was 274 and was the same in 2000. The leaders of the congregation were: Peter Unger (1957-1961), Jake Nickel (1962-1965), Abe Sawatzky (1965-1966), George Groening (1966-19791), Menno Epp (1971-1983), Bruce Wiebe (1984-1985), John Lenshyn (1986-1992), Ed Balzer (1993), Richard Yordy (1994), Adam Robinson (1995-1997), Helen and Bill Krueger (1998-2000), Doug Klassen (2001- ).

Scope and content note

This fonds contains bulletins (1963-2014), annual reports (1962-1981), constitutions ([196-?]-1992), correspondence (1959-1966), reports to mission board (1962-1964), directories (1971-1997, 2001), newsletters (1975-1994), congregational meeting minutes and reports (1977-1993), financial statements (1977-1993), church board meeting minutes (1980), board of deacons meeting minutes (1980), and a 25th anniversary book (1981). The records pertain to the founding and development of the Mennonite congregation in Calgary, Alberta. They document some of the leaders and participants in the congregation.
