Historical note

The Brandon Mennonite Mission began in 1954 when Ältester G. Neufeld of the Whitewater Gemeinde held a service in Brandon. During the next year this group was served by various ministers from the Whitewater Gemeinde. They met in rented facilities. In 1957 the Conference of Mennonites in Canada sent a couple to give leadership to this group, namely MaryAnn and Henry Isaac. In 1959 they completed their own meeting house and became an independent congregation. There were 26 charter members in 1959. In 1971 an addition to the meeting house was completed. The membership in 1971 was 87. In 1983 the meeting house was expanded again. The membership was 111 in 1983. The congregation served the various students who came to study at Brandon University. There was a division in the congregation in 1993 over theological differences. In 2000 the membership stood at 68. The leaders of the congregation were: MaryAnn and Henry Isaac (1957-1961), Margaret and Peter Unger (1961-1967), Eleanor and Waldo Neufeld (1968), Anna and David Braun (1969-1971), Joanne and Reynold Kipfer (1971-1975), Alma and Peter Bartel (1977-1983), Mary and Henry Patkau (1983-1989), John Isaak (1990), Darrel Thiessen (1990-1992), Abe Krahn (1992-1999), Bernie Wiebe (1994), David Wiebe (1994-1995), George Derksen (1995- ).

Scope and content note

This fonds consists of minutes, bulletins, annual reports, directories , and constitution which pertain to the beginning and development of the Mennonite congregation in Brandon, Manitoba. It documents the leaders and participants in the congregation. This fonds contains bulletins (1962-2000), congregational meeting minutes (1976-1989), annual reports (1961-1988), directories (1971-1985), constitution ([196-?]), and a brief congregational history (1983).
