Historical note
The congregation began services in 1837, and formally
organized in 1851. The first building was occupied in 1851, with
subsequent building programs in 1902, 1950 and 1980. The congregation
originated through immigration from Pennsylvania. The early settlers
included David Eby, Jonas Bingeman and Samuel Schantz. David Eby is
considered the founding leader of the group. Erb St. was originally
known as the David Eby church, and later the Waterloo Church. Ministers
prior to 1950 included Elias Schneider, Jonas Snider, Noah Hunsberger,
Newton Weber and Jesse B. Martin. The congregation was affiliated with
the Mennonite Conference of Ontario and Quebec (1851-1988), which
became one of the conference which formed the Mennonite Conference of
Eastern Canada in 1988. The congregation was a major supporter of the
Russian Mennonite immigrants who arrived in the 1920s at the Erb Street
Railway station. Other leaders of the congregation were: Ross Bender
(1959-1960), Douglas Snyder (1964-1965, 1978-1979), 1988-2000), Milton
Schwartzentruber (1966-1970), Galen Johns (1971-1976), Wilmer Martin
(1979-1991), Richard Yordy (1991-1992), Renee Sauder (1993- ), Allan
Rudy-Froese (2000- ).

The fonds contains bulletins (1996-2001), annual
reports (1998-2001), and newsletters (1998-2001).
