Historical note

In the early 1950s there was a large influx of Mennonite immigrants to the Essex County area, both from Russia and other parts of European and Asian Soviet Union, and South America. The meeting house in Leamington was not able to accommodate the increased number of worshippers. So in 1954 another meeting house was built north of Leamington close to the high school. This meeting house was expanded with the addition of an educational wing in 1961. The people meeting here were still members of the Leamington United Mennonite Church until 1980 when it became an independent congregation. The membership was 485 in 1981 and 506 in 2000. The leaders of the congregation were: Cornelius Driedger (1980-1988), Victor Kliewer (1989-2000), Bruce Wiebe (2000- ).

Scope and content note

This fonds contains bulletins (1981-2001), congregational directory (1979), marriage register (1926-1946), membership survey (1987), elders meeting minutes (1981), and newsletters (1986-2001). The records pertain to the founding and development of the Mennonite congregation in Leamington, Ontario. They document the leaders and participants in the congregation.
