Historical note

Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church was founded in 1924 in Kitchener, Ontario. It resulted from a dispute in the First Mennonite Church over dress code. There were 115 charter members. They met in the First Mennonite Church meeting house until 1925. They then completed their own meeting house. This building was expanded in the 1950s and again in the 1990s. In 1947 there were 411 members. In 1960 there were 437 members. It stayed at about that level until 1990 when it was 368. In 2000 it was 318. The leaders of the congregation were: Urias Weber (1924-1942), Andrew Shelly ([1947?]-1953), Wilfred Ulrich (1954-1962), James Reusser (1963-1975), Ron Rempel (1976-1978), Martha Smith Good (1979), Alson Weber (1980), Vernon Leis (1981-1987), Mary Mae Schwartendruber (1981-1991), Paul Martin (1992), David Martin (1993- ).

Scope and content note

This fonds contains bulletins (1952, 1961, 1968-1988,1996-2001), newsletters (1949-1958, 1965-1988, 1995-1999), directories (1973-1977, 1993-2001), minutes (1995), and annual reports (1943, 1944, 1950-1971, 1980, 1995). The records pertain to the development of the Mennonite congregation in Kitchener, Ontario. They document some of the leaders and participants in the congregation.
