Historical note

The Toronto Chinese Mennonite Church was founded in 1980 in Toronto, Ontario. They were the result of outreach ministries specifically to the Chinese community in Toronto in 1979. The membership was 20 in 1981. They increased steadily that decade to reach 80 by 1989.They met for worship in the Danforth Mennonite Church in the afternoons until 1989. Then they rented other facilities until 2001 when they purchased their own meeting house. In 1990 they assisted in the formation of another Chinese Mennonite congregation in Markham. In 1991 they withdrew from the Mennonite conference but rejoined again in 1995. The membership in 1995 was 127. They began as a Cantonese-speaking congregation but have since added English-language services as well as Mandarin-language services. They have also reached out beyond the Chinese community through involvement in local MCC projects. In 2000 the membership was 93. The leader of the congregation was Winfred Soong (1979-2000).
