Historical note

The Waters Mennonite Church was founded in 1959 in Lively, Ontario. Sunday School work had begun in 1946 under the leadership of Elvina and Thomas Martin, a young couple for the Waterloo area. They held Sunday School in private dwellings and then in rented facilities. In 1955 they built a basement structure and came under the jurisdiction of the General Conference Mennonite Church. In 1959 the congregation was formally organized with 20 charter members. In 1963 the entire building was completed and they then had their completed meeting house. In 1970 the membership was 35. In 1982 it was 59 and in 2000 it stood at 46. The leaders of the congregation were: Thomas Martin (1946-1955), Henry Schroeder (1955-1957, 1964, 1982), Menno Ediger (1957-1964), Lydia and Gary Harder (1965-1967), Marie and John Zacharias (1967-1981), Dennis Watts (1983-1991), Paul Martin (1992), Anna-Lisa Salo (1993-2000), Dave Nicol (2000- ).

Scope and content note

This fonds contains bulletins (1963-1998), annual reports (1963-1994), a brief historical sketch (1960-1989), correspondence (1959-1966), 2 photographs : b&w ; 12 cm X 8 cm (1959), constitution (1996), directories (1988-1997), and congregational minutes (1995). The records pertain to the development of the Mennonite congregation in Lively, Ontario. They document some of the leaders and participants in the congregation.
