Historical note

The Tiefengrund Rosenort Mennonite Church is located 7.5 km north of Laird, Saskatchewan. It was founded in 1895 by Peter Regier (1851-1925), who had been ordained as a bishop in West Prussia in 1887, and immigrated to the Tiefengrund area in 1894. They built their first meeting house in Laird in 1910. Tiefengrund was part of the Rosenort church group. The Horse Lake congregation bought the congregation's building that was replaced in 1958. The Rosenorter group of churches was dissolved in 1962, which resulted in this congregation becoming independent. In 1963 the membership was 150. In 2000 it stood at 141. The leaders of the congregation were: Johannes Regier (1911-1945), Johann Friesen (1930-1968), Arthur Regier (1951-1966), Henry Klaassen (1967-1969), Robert Friesen (1970-1981), Arthur E. Regier (1982), Richard Bucher (1983-1993), Les Regier (1994), Roy Kauffman (1995-1998), Barbara Friesen (1999-2000), Lorne Epp (2001- ).

Scope and content note

The fonds contains a church register (1909?-1958), bulletins (1968-2004), annual reports (1971-2004), congregational meeting minutes (1990-1998), church council meeting minutes and highlights (1984-1997), newsletters (1984-2000), newspaper clippings (1980-1990), calendar of activities included in the newsletters (1984-2000), and directories (1987-1998). These records pertain to the development of the Mennonite congregation in Laird after it became independent in the early 1960s.
