Synode GITD/Muria = Synode Geredja Indjili di Tanah Djawa/Muria (in the spelling of the late 1960s

when this map was prepared. (Translation: Synod of the Evangelical Church of the land of Java/Muria).

2. The area represented is the northern part of Central Java, assigned by the inter-denomination mission

agencies to the Dutch Mennonites about 1847 and became the site of the first Mennonite mission work

among non-European peoples. The Christian presence in the depicted area is thus "Mennonite".

3. Muria refers to the mountain in the centre of the peninsula. "Synod" is the term used in Indonesia in

place of "Conference" in North America to designate the aggregate body of affiliated congregations.

4. The GITD (today GITJ) has its central office in Pati. The church there is marked by the largest green

church building symbol. (See "Dutch Mennonite Mission Association" In Mennonite Encyclopedia II:113;

"Pati" ME IV:123; "Java" II: 99))

5. Other church symbols in green indicate full member congregations of the GITD as of the late 1960s.

The green circles designate preaching outposts of one or another of the "mother" congregations.

6. The Chinese Mennonite Synod (Persatua Gredja-Geredja Kristen Muria Indonesia, GKMI) was founded

about 1927 in Kudus, ca 25 km west of Pati. In the late 1960s its central office was located here. The

yellow church symbols represent locations of GKMI member congregations. (See "Kudus" in ME III:252)

7. This map was hand-made by a man in prison as an accused communist sympathizer after the aborted

coup attempt on 30 September 1965. A number of copies were made in water colour; the GITD sold

them for their practical function and to support the family of the (wrongly?) imprisoned man.

8. Kay Friesen, MCC nurse in Taju (near the coast north of Pati) from the Schoenfelder Church in

Pigeon Lake, served in Indonesia during the 1960s and donated this map to MHC.
