The Manitoba Mennonite Historical Society (MMHS) was established in 1958. Its objectives have been to foster an awareness of Mennonite history and culture. The efforts of the Agricultural Advisory Committee on the Mennonite West Reserve during the 1930s and the publications of history books such those written by P.J. Schaefer served as a catalyst for the forming of MMHS. The early leaders in the Society were Gerhard Lohrenz, P.J.B Reimer, Gerhard Ens, and John C. Reimer.
The Society established the Mennonite Village Museum in Steinbach, Manitoba in 1967. It was also planned centennial celebrations in 1967, 1970 and 1975. In 1979 the Society separated into a museum society and a history and cultural organization, with the latter retaining the name. In 1981, a new constitution was completed by John J. Friesen and the Society was incorporated under the Corporations Act of Manitoba. The re-organized society concentrated its efforts on book publication, educational activities and creating cultural awareness.
In 1988 the MMHS again split into two groups. The new group formed the Hanover Steinbach Historical Society (HSHS) which focused on the research and publication of the history of the area surrounding Steinbach, Manitoba.
The Society began publishing the MMHS Newsletter in December 1984. In 1999, after publishing 23 issues, the name was changed to Heritage Posting.
In 2005 the Society had a membership of about 200 people. It had a board with a five-person executive committee and five standing committees -- Local History, Genealogy, Publication and Marketing, Membership and Publicity, and Historic Sites and Monuments.
This fonds contains minutes, reports, correspondence and project files of the board, executive and committees of the Society. An annual report book provides an overview of the activities and projects undertaken in order to meet the Society's objectives. The records of the board, executive and committees provide more details on the activities and projects. The activities include celebration events, seminars and workshops, research, publication and marketing. This fonds consists of the following records:

Historical Note
Until 1995, there were three regional sub-committees which were the
Steinbach, Winkler/Altona, and Winnipeg genealogy committees. The
committees promoted family history through hosting workshops in the
various regions. Annually all the committees would meet as a "central
committee" to plan a joint genealogical seminar, and also to promote
and judge the high school essay writing competition in family history
(Henry E. Plett award). After 1995 the regional committees no longer
functioned, but a reorganized Genealogy and Family History Committee
assumed the mandate to promote family history and genealogy in all
areas of interest in Manitoba. The re-organized committee also
initiated projects which consisted of translating original documents
into English such as the Molotschna 1835 Census and other selected
documents from the Peter J. Braun Russian Archive and the St.
Petersburg Microfilming Project. It published Mennonite Migration to
Russia 1788-1828 by Peter Rempel (Moscow) edited by Richard D. Thiessen
and Alfred H. Redekopp in 2000.
Scope and Content
This series includes minutes (1984-2005), reports (1986-2005), workshop

Historical Note
The Local History and Historic Sites committee's purpose was to
maintain historic sites, to create new cairns and memorials and to help
preserve local Mennonite history. This included writing community
histories, locating century farms and locating cemeteries. Some of the
monuments erected include a Russian Mennonite Memorial at the Mennonite
Village Museum in Steinbach. After the Hanover Steinbach Historical
Society (HSHS) was formed in 1988, the Local History and Historic Sites
Committee began to focus more on the recording and documenting
Mennonite History in the former Mennonite West Reserve. Activities
relating to historic sites and monuments became the responsibility of
another committee in 1994. The committee began the West Reserve
Historical Series of books in 1994. The books published in the series
include Reinländer Gemeinde Buch (1994), 1880 Village Census
of the Mennonite West Reserve (1998), Church, Family and Village:
Essays on Mennonite Life on the West Reserve (2001), Sommerfeld
Gemeinde Buch: Registers of the Church at West Lynne 1881-1935 (2004),

Historical Note
The MMHS board established the Historic Sites and Monuments committee
in 1995 upon the recommendation and proposal from Lawrence Klippenstein
who became the committee's first chairman. The committee's purpose was
to fill in the gap left behind by the former Local History and Historic
Sites Committee when its focus shifted to the research and publishing
of the West Reserve Historical Series. The Historic Sites and Monuments
committee worked at locating sites of significance to Manitoba
Mennonites, establishing cairns, recording cemetery locations and
helping with the restoration of the Altbergthal School.

It also includes research materials related to the Post Road memorial

Historical Note
This committee was established in order to promote the society and
encourage membership growth. Originally, this committee publicized the
events planned by the standing committees. During the 1990s the
committees often did their own advertising and this committee's focus
became the production of the newsletter and maintaining the membership
list. Until 1999 Society members received the MMHS Newsletter and the
Mennonite Historian as a membership benefit. For a short period, the
MMHS Newsletter was published as part of the Mennonite Historian. The
association with the Mennonite Historian was discontinued in 1999 when
a more substantial quarterly entitled Heritage Posting was initiated to
succeed the newsletter.
Scope and Content
This series includes minutes (1979-2004), reports (1980-2004),
advertisements (1972-2004), correspondence (1972-1992), membership

The Society established "Book Club" in 1984 with a goal to provide good
marketing of Mennonite related books. Notices were placed in various
Mennonite periodicals. Within a year the book club membership was over
200. When the volunteers that provided the service for what was largely
a mail order venture retired, the service was taken over by a private
venture, namely Gilbert Brandt of Brandt Family Enterprises (BFE) who
continued to market Mennonite Books. Scope and content This series

that the MMHS organize an event at the Forks in Winnipeg -- the
original landing site of Mennonite immigrants in 1874. Ken Reddig
chaired the committee that organized the commemorative event at the
Forks. Other committee members included Lawrence Klippenstein, Conrad
Stoesz, Adolf Ens, and Irene Kroeker. Some MMHS members were also
involved in writing articles for a special newspaper insert in the
Winnipeg Free Press. In 2000 the committee was chaired by Conrad Stoesz
with members Lawrence Klippenstein, Ed Hoeppner, Ken Reddig, and Adolf
Ens. Activities that year included a newspaper insert in the rural
papers, radio heritage vignettes, a Post Road bus tour, and an event at
