    Historical note

    The Mennonite Collegiate Institute (MCI), originally known as the Mennonitische Bildungsanstalt (Mennonite Educational Institute, MEI) was founded by the MEI School Society in 1888. Opening its doors in Gretna, Manitoba in 1889 under the direction of teacher Wilhelm Rempel, the school's primary mandate was the training of Mennonite elementary school teachers. With time, however, an increasing number of Mennonite parents came to value education beyond basic arithmetic and literacy skills, and sent their children to the institute for the more general purpose of acquiring a good education in a Christian context.
    Heinrich H. Ewert was hired as the school's principal and teacher in 1891, opening the door for the provincial government's support since he had the qualifications required by Manitoba's Department of Education. Under Ewert's leadership the school experienced its incorporation in 1893, the curtailment of governmental support in 1903, and the 1904-1908 controversy regarding the location of a new school building since the MEI's facilities had become unable to meet the growing demands on the institution. When Altona was chosen above Gretna and Winkler as the site of the new school, Gretna supporters appointed Ewert as the principal of a new school of their own which they named the Mennonitische Lehranstalt (Mennonite Collegiate Institute). Both the MCI (Gretna) and the new MEI (Altona) were dedicated in 1908.
    H.H. Ewert was succeeded by Gerhard H. Peters as principal of the MCI at the time of his death in 1934. Other principals include Paul J. Schaefer, 1948-1967; Gerhard Ens, 1967-1976, with Ernie Wiens as acting principal from 1971-1972 and Henry Dick as vice-principal during this time; Ken Loewen, 1976-1985; and Allan Dueck, 1985- , with vice-principal Dave Regehr.
    Following its re-opening as the MCI, the school in Gretna underwent several administrative changes. In 1930 the School Society which had founded the institute transferred its control of MCI to the Mennonitische Schulkonferenz von Manitoba (Manitoba Church-School Conference). When this organization disbanded in 1936, the school fell into the jurisdiction of the Conference of Mennonites in Manitoba (CMM), which soon relinquished its control to the Schulverein der Mennonitengemeinden Manitobas (Manitoa Inter-Mennonite School Society) in 1939. The school was rebuilt in 1964/65 following a fire destroyed the facility in 1963, and major renovations to the dormitory and gymnasium were made in 1976. During the 1976, MCI again began accepting government funding, signalling a movement towards the educational mainstream that was ushered in with the appointment of Ken Loewen as principal. This trend was somewhat reversed with the Think Tank which met in 1986 to provide direction and purpose for the MCI and whose recommendations reflected a renewed commitment to the values espoused by the school's founders.

    Custodial history

    The initial portion of this collection was obtained by the Mennonite Heritage Centre Archives (MHCA) from the MCI in 1977. Much of the material in this and related collections was gathered by Dennis Stoesz, who was commissioned by the MHCA to do so in 1976. Further MCI minutes and reports were donated by David Harms in 1986. This section of the collection was archived by Jim Suderman, assistant archivist, in 1989-1990, and was classified under record group RG XXII B. The scope of the collection was expanded in 1993 with the MHCA's acquisition of additional materials from the MCI.

    SERIES DESCRIPTION

    1. Minutes and Reports. - 1888-1991. - 72 cm of textual records.
      This series consists of minutes and reports generated by MCI annual meetings, board meetings, and executive meetings, as well as various committees including the finance committee, personnel committee, curriculum committee, maintenance committee, and public relations committee. Included are reports prepared by the principal and the business administrator, and the minutes of a faculty meeting. The series also has lists of delegates attending the annual general meetings.

    2. Financial Records. - 1908-1990. - 81 cm of textual records.
      This series consists of general financial ledgers, annual financial statements, financial reports, entries of accounts receivable and payable, finance-related correspondence, and salary ledgers. There are materials pertaining to taxes, mortgages, insurance, and investments, as well as MCI land transfer documents, building maintenance related material, newspaper clippings regarding the financing of private schools, and the student council's financial statements. Also included are financial records and correspondence related to the various scholarship and bursary funds available to MCI students.

    3. Student Records. - 1916-1993. - 65 cm of textual records.
      This series consists of student registration cards, attendance register, semi-annual enrolment records, and monthly student attendance summaries. Other material includes student council agendas, homecoming material, student newspapers, and student handbooks.

    4. Building Records. - 1908-1981. - 10 cm of textual records.
      This series consists of financial records, lists of donations, and correspondence related to various MCI building projects. Included are blueprints and contract bids, as well as progress notes and minutes of meetings regarding construction.

    5. Curriculum and Publicity. - 1895-1991. - 14 cm of textual records.
      This series consists of curriculum related records and promotional materials including course outlines, reviews, pamphlets, catalogues, news releases, and correspondence with the constituency. There is an MCI report made to the Department of Education and a file of general correspondence. MCI constitutions, by-laws, student regulations and documents pertaining to the incorporation of the institution are also included. Promotional material consists of materials related to the Church School Hour Radio Program, the Folk Art Council (re: Folklorama), concerts, Sängerfest, and Youth Orbit.

    6. Dormitory Records. - 1963-1976. - 4 cm of textual records.
      This series consists of the dean's records of student activities and incidents in the dormitory, residents' weekend passes and late leaves, a demerit and detention notice, lists of roommate arrangements, and the dining hall seating plan.

    7. MCI Projects, and Other Materials Related to Individuals. - 1915-1976. - 10 cm of textual records and ca. 21 hours of audio recordings.
      This series consists of Dennis Stoesz' research materials cataloguing the location of information pertaining to the MCI (1976). Included are notes on people contacted, research leads, a bibliography, and Literary Society and Alumni notes. A second project was the MCI Oral History project done in 1986 by Anita Ens. This second project includes audio cassettes and summary transcriptions. There are also copies of William Defehr's autograph book and graduation certificate, a tribute to H.H. Ewert, and the correspondence of various individuals. This series includes photocopies of MCI- related photographs collected for the book Die Schule Muss Sein (see bibliography).

    8. Other Organizations and Miscellaneous Records. - 1961-1988. - 12 cm of textual records.
      This series consists of materials generated by other organizations that were collected by the MCI. Included are documents from the Manitoba Federation of Independent Schools (MFIS), the Canadian Association of Mennonite Schools (CAMS), the Manitoba Missions Committee, the Conference of Mennonites in Manitoba (CMM), the Conference of Mennonites in Canada (CMC), and various organizations within the CMC. There is material from the Mennonite Historical Society, Westgate Mennonite Collegiate and other private schools, correspondence to board members of the Canadian Mennonite Bible College (CMBC), and a list of Der Mitarbeiter found in the MCI collection. This series includes a file of miscellaneous records.

      This series consists of materials gathered by the principal and include staff meetings, staff data sheets, job descriptions, salary scales, and personnel committee material. There is also an older item that is a collection of school inspector reports regarding teachers and facilities.
