    Historical note

    Jacob Bergmann was born on October 16, 1887, in Gnadenthal, Manitoba, (south of Plum Coulee) to Peter and Tina (Kath.) Bergmann. He received six years of education: three years in Gnadenthal; some private schooling at home; and the rest in Rudnerweide. He married Katharina Siemens of Schoenthal on October 29, 1921. They settled in Myrtle, and then later moved to the Bergfeld district. In 1956, they moved to Altona, where Jacob resided until his death. During his life, Jacob was a school trustee, the director of the Rhineland Agricultural Society, and a member of the Altona Bergthaler Church. Jacob and Katharina had three children, and Jacob died on February 27, 1980, at the Altona Hospital.

    Scope and content note

    This fonds consists of published documents concerning the Mennonite Educational Institute (Altona, MB, 1909-1924), teachers' conventions (1917-1921), the Rhineland Trustee Convention (1917) and a memoir (letter) written by teacher Wilhelm Rempel about his experiences as an educator. In addition, there are single items dealing with the Bergthaler Waisenamt (church mutual aid and trust fund institution) (1935) and the Co-operative Institute (1958), as well as several pamphlets dating from the pre-1918 era concerning peace issues. The collection is chiefly of interest for researchers studying education in southern Manitoba.
