Johann Klippenstein, minister and farmer, was born on October 1, 1856 to Peter Klippenstein (1831-1904) and Anna Klassen (1834-1910) in the Bergthal Colony, South Russia. His family came to Canada on the S.S. Sarmatian in July 1875. The Peter Klippenstein family first settled in the village of Bergthal in the Manitoba East Reserve and then moved to the Mennonite West Reserve village of Neubergthal. Johann Klippenstein was baptized on June 10, 1878 (Bergthal Church of the East Reserve). In 1880 he married Sara Funk on January 20th. Their marriage produced 7 children of which only 3 survived. Klippenstein was elected and ordained to the ministry at Sommerfeld on June 25, 1895 by Aeltester Abraham Doerksen, of the newly formed Sommerfelder Mennonite Church. He served the Sommerfelder Mennonite Church for the remaining 16 years of his life during which time he conducted 90 funerals and 80 weddings. Johann Klippenstein died on January 4, 1912.
This fonds contains one notebook which gives an explanation of the questions and answers in the catechism book for young people.
