    Historical note

Jacob M. Pauls was born on 11 November 1903 in the village of Grigorievka, Ukraine. He married Maria Funk on 31 January 1926. They immigrated to Canada that same year and settled in the Morden area in Manitoba.
Pauls took on the role of choir conductor soon after arrival in Morden's small Bergthaler Mennonite congregation, then led by P.P. Epp. In 1932 he was elected and ordained as the first minister of the Morden Bergthaler congregation, serving along side Rev. P. P. Epp. Pauls first became active in the work of the Conference of Mennonites in Canada in 1949. Ten years later he succeeded J.J. Thiessen as chairman of the Conference.
1951 was J.M. Pauls' last year in the Morden congregation. He subsequently became more involved in the Winkler community -- Winkler Bergthaler Mennonite Church, Salem Old Folks Home, Eden Mental Health Centre. He also served on the board of Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Gretna for fifteen years.
Jacob Pauls died in Winkler, Manitoba on 20 November 1961. It is estimated that 1600 people attended the funeral, filling both the Mennonite Brethren church building and the Bergthaler Mennonite church building, which we connected so that all could sit and listen to the service.

    Scope and content note

This fonds is dominated by sermon notes and conference materials. The materials also reflect J.M. Pauls' involvement with Sunday School and youth activities which span his career within the Bergthaler community. There are files related to his involvement with Salem Old Folks home and the Winkler Bergthaler Church. Unfortunately, his involvement Eden Mental Health Centre and Mennonite Collegiate Institute are not well documented in the collection.
A few personal papers in the fonds include some family correspondence, a short story written by Pauls and his wife about their lives in Russia. There is also a diary of his trip in 1957 to attend the Mennonite World Conference in Germany.
