Historical note

Johann H. Schroeder (1870-1956) was born in the Bergthal Colony, South Russia and immigrated with his parents, Gerhard Schroeder and Anna Harder, to Manitoba. He married Katharina Doerksen (1868-1939), daughter of Jacob Doerksen and Margaretha Penner. Together they had three children Johann, Gerhard, and Katherina. On November 24, 1910 Johann was called to the ministry in the Chortitzer Mennonite church. Schroeder collected religious tracts and also wrote at least three himself.

Scope and content note

The material in this fonds consists of diaries, totaling eight books, documenting Johann H. Schroeder's life, and a collection of religious tracts, three of which Schroeder wrote himself. The diaries were begun by Johann H. Schroeder after the negotiations with the Manitoba government convincing some people to emigrate to Paraguay. On December 31, 1921, he passed the diary on to his invalid son Johann (1891-1944) who continued the diary, writing about his father's activities. After young Johann's death the diary was continued by the youngest son Gerhard (1893-1959). At the back of the diaries is a list of people who have died in the years the diary covers. The eighth book is a book of letters.

Custodial history

The materials were inherited by Rev. Schroeder's grandson, Abram P. Dueck (1909-1993). After Dueck's death Ernie Braun bought the diaries and religious tracts at the Dueck auction sale in the spring or fall of 1993. Jacob Doerksen went through the diaries and noted the content of the material which Ernest Braun gave to the Centre with the materials in February 1994.
