World Of Witness - Ethiopia

Ministry

Mennonite Church Canada Witness began its involvement with Ethiopia a few years ago with the sending of a team of volunteers to work at the Meserete Kristos College, the main teaching institute of the Meserete Kristos Church of Ethiopia. The Meserete Kristos Church began over 55 years ago because of the work of Mennonite missionaries who came to the country through Eastern Mennonite Missions. During the communist regime in 1982, the church was forced underground. It emerged 10 years later in 1991, having grown from 5,000 to 35,000. This is now the largest affiliated Mennonite Church in the world and is growing at a rate of 8 percent per year. Its challenge is to provide training to the ministers, teachers, pastors, and evangelists who are leading these congregations with little or no formal theological education. Mennonite Church Canada Witness continues to send Resource Workers to help the Church, through the Meserete Kristos College.

Celebrations

  • Ongoing growth of the Meserete Kristos Church.
  • The interest shown by many Canadian Mennonite Scholars to continue to serve at the Meserete Kristos College as Resource Workers.
  • Planning Ahead Through Education

Challenges

  • Need for trained leaders and ministers capable of effective congregational ministry and biblical teaching.
  • Ongoing development of Meserete Kristos College to become the first accredited Christian University in Ethiopia.
