World Of Witness - Macau

Ministry

Mennonite Church Canada Witness is planting an Anabaptist peace church in Macau. This ministry began in 1996 and continues as a partnership of several Mennonite church bodies. Today a small congregation is emerging. Through cell groups, English classes, children’s classes, and friendship evangelism, the Macau team invites workingclass people to join the community of people who follow Jesus. Most of the programs and worship activities are done at the rented church facilites. Macau is a growing economic and industrial centre on a small and densely populated island in China’s Pearl River Delta area. Now under Chinese rule, this former Portuguese colony is seen as a gateway to China. Many short-term construction workers come to Macau from China for employment. It is also a city of much gambling, prostitution, and Western commercial influence.

Challenges

  • Many of the people in Macau work two job shifts and have little time for involvement in other activities, including Christian ones.
  • It has been challenging to identify and train Chinese leaders to provide long-term leadership for the church.
