Ministry
Mennonite ministries in South Africa include theological education,
capacity development in partner churches, ecumenical partnership development,
community development work, and support of AIDS ministries. Mennonite
Church Canada Witness workers are based in Pietermaritzburg, the capital
of KwaZulu Natal province, and work closely with other Mennonite ministry
partners. Mennonite Mission Network has workers in Mthatha and Pietermaritzburg.
These workers also work with churches in Khayelitsha (Way of Life) and
Philipstown (Grace Community Church). Mennonite Central Committee has
workers in Durban and in Johannesburg.
Celebrations
- In spite of a small Mennonite presence in South Africa in the past,
there are many people who have been exposed to Anabaptist understandings
and practice and are bringing that to bear on their ministries.
- Witness
workers have been warmly welcomed in many settings by churches and
agencies that are eager to benefit from their experience.
- The team
of Mennonite workers in South Africa has a wide range of gifts and
interests and takes delight in working together.
- Canadian Mennonites
have been eager to connect with the church in South Africa, both to
contribute where there are needs and to learn from the South African
churches.
