World Of Witness - Ukraine

Ministry

As a young Republic, Ukraine still struggles with unstable democracy, economic crises, environmental degradation, social unrest and more recently, an HIV/AIDS epidemic and the reappearance of tuberculosis. In the 1990s, a few persons of Mennonite background gathered to form a Mennonite church in Zaporozhye, now known as the Zaporozhye Evangelical Mennonite Church (ZEMC). Since then, another Mennonite congregation has been established in Mis near Kherson. Mennonite Church Canada supports this ministry, as well as that of Pastor Sergei and Lena Deynekin in an innovative church planting ministry in Chernobaevka, near Kherson.

Celebrations

  • The ZEMC has found a new pastor in the person of Shevtsov Ratislov.
  • Successful Sunday school ministry and the celebration of new baptisms at ZEMC.
  • Successful summer camps for children and youth at Mis.
  • A solid children and youth ministry in the three congregations.

Challenges

  • Ministering in the midst of social and economic collapse.
  • Equipping local believers for leadership roles.
  • Acquiring a building permit for the church in the city of Zaporozhye.
