English is increasingly being used in China’s health services, medical education, and medical research. The Benders’ assignment is to provide a Christian presence and to teach English to undergraduates, graduate students, doctors and teachers in Chinese universities.  In 2009 Phil and Julie moved from Chongqing, where they had taught for five years at the Chongqing Medical University, to the smaller city of Dazhou where they now teach at the Sichuan University of Arts and Science.  They have found many of their students to be curious in matters of faith and spirituality, though most have no church background. Their classes introduce students to a wide range of social issues, ethical values, and intercultural understanding, while informal settings allow for conversations about Christian faith. “What a privilege and responsibility to teach these ‘leaders’ of China’s future,” says Julie. Pray that Phil and Julie as they adjust to a new setting in Dazhou and establish a new set of relationships with students, teaching colleagues and church connections in Dazhou.
