Belfast, Northern Ireland
May 26-June 21, 2003
Two mature and caring individuals are needed to help staff the Belfast Central
Mission Children's Holiday Programme for under-privileged children. You will
spend your first few days in Northern Ireland becoming oriented to the work
of Childhaven, a camp along the coast about 25 miles from Belfast, and receive
training to know how to respond to the various challenges these disadvantaged
children face. In addition to serving as a counselor for two weeks at Childhaven,
you will have a week in-between to travel on your own throughout Northern
Ireland to learn about "The Troubles" and the ways Mennonites are
meeting the challenges of sectarianism. Because there are no leaders who will
accompany the team and due to the sensitivity required to work with these
Protestant and Catholic children, a more extensive application and referral
process will be required. Previous experience working with children is a prerequisite.
- 2 people (Ages 18-25)
- $100 U.S./$150 Canadian, plus airfare and personal expenses for one week
on your own

for young adults in Lurgan and to make God's love relevant to them."
The Lurgan YMCA specifically works with "at risk" 14 to 25 year
olds at two drop in centres - one in each community. The Youth Venture team
hopes to encourage cross community work through their presence and in scheduled
activities in this town that is very much divided on sectarian lines.
