World Communion Sunday

Today is World Communion Sunday! As we partake of bread and wine in Christ’s name with brothers and sisters around the globe, pray that by living each day in God’s abundant love and grace, we will inspire others to seek God’s everlasting Shalom.

Andrew and Karen Suderman are settling into their new roles as MC Canada Witness workers in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. In a recent prayer letter, they wrote, “We have been received into churches, congregations, and peoples’ lives with warmth and joy.” Thank you for your support of the Sudermans as they adapt to a new culture and language!

Philippines Learning Tour 2010 still has 2-3 spots available for the March 4-14 tour dates! You are invited to engage, see, and learn about Witness ministries in the Philippines. There are also a number of spots remaining for the January 21-31 tour dates. More information is available at mennonitechurch. ca/getinvolved or by contacting Norm Dyck at 1-866-888-6785.

Mennonite Church Canada Witness workers Anne Garber Kompaore and Jeff Warkentin both reported that in early Sept. 2009, unusually heavy rains in Ouagadougou turned streets into canals. Please pray for those who lost their homes and belongings in the deluge, and for the five families who lost loved ones as a result of the disaster.

Mennonite Church Canada General Secretary, Robert J. Suderman, has announced his intention to retire no later than August 31, 2010. During his term, Suderman has been deeply involved in the international church, and has been an important voice in ecumenical circles through MC Canada’s membership in the Canadian Council of Churches and the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada. Your support has enabled the nurture of these important relationships!

Pray for good health for MC Canada Witness workers Lillian (Haas) and Norm Nicolson and their infant daughter, in Burkina Faso. Norm is recovering from a recent bout of malaria and dysentery. The Nicolsons work at Bible translation, teaching, and Christian radio broadcasting among the local Siamou-speaking people.

Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal congregations will meet in Winnipeg on October 17 for The Manitoba Partnership Circle to continue strengthening relationships and to plan how they will work together in this coming year. Thank you for your support of this ministry of hope and reconciliation! What can the church in Canada learn from the South African church’s experience with apartheid and its Truth and Reconciliation Commission? Mennonite Heritage Sunday

Pray that the message of Christ will continue to transcend linguistic and cultural barriers in Canada and abroad. Currently, 45 of MC Canada’s some 225 congregations are from backgrounds other than Russian or Swiss Mennonite traditions. Sunday worship services are offered in English, German, French and 12 other languages.

Mennonite Heritage Sunday
As the official repository of archival records for many Mennonite organizations, the Mennonite Heritage Centre is often able to provide genealogical evidence that helps Mennonites from Mexico legally enter Canada. Thank you for supporting this important ministry!
