July 4, 2004

This week delegates and other interested persons from across Canada will be gathering in Winkler to worship God, fellowship with one another, and discern God’s will for Mennonite Church Canada. Pray for safety in travel, and for wisdom, understanding and profound sensitivity to the Holy Spirit throughout these days.

MC Canada Financial Update: Thank-you to congregations for your strong support this year. A number of congregations have raised their support for this year. Year-to-date giving is about 10% ($87,000) short of plan. Each gift is an important part of making possible ministries like seminary teaching in South America, counseling for AIDS victims in Africa, and support for rural pastors in China. Thank-you!

Children and community are two themes that emerge frequently for the Mennonite Church in Bolivia with whom Mennonite Church Canada Witness partners. Together, we teach Anabaptist perspectives; resource pastors; work with children’s ministries and support PROJUSE, a Bolivian voluntary service program.

Assembly 2004 is now finished and those who gathered in Winkler are on their way home. To learn what happened, check www.mennonitechurch.ca and follow the links to the daily news sheet, or watch for the next issue of Canadian Mennonite. Continue to pray for the church and for the MC Canada staff as they implement the decisions that were made. Pray for our people, our congregations and our area conferences as we all continue the walk together toward faithfulness.

August 1, 2004

In mid-August, Neill & Edith von Gunten, long time Native Ministry staff, will complete their term of service with Mennonite Church Canada. They will now be accountable to the partnership circle developed between northern Manitoba Native fellowships and several Mennonite Church Manitoba congregations. Please pray that these groups will work well together and provide leadership and guidance to the responsibilities and service that Neill and Edith can give.

Ivan & Violetta Dyshenko, local pastors of the Evangelical Mennonite Church in Zaporozhzhya, took over the work of Jake & Dorothy Unrau just over one year ago. Mennonite Church Canada Witness continues to support the church through a grant for their ministries.

August 8, 2004

Pray for Arlyn Friesen Epp at the Mennonite Church Canada Resource Centre, as he helps congregations discern which study and worship materials best serve God’s ministry in their context.

The London Mennonite Centre offers Anabaptist teaching resources, including seminars and congregational speakers to the broader Christian church in England, as well as mediation and conflict management and a retreat centre for broader networking. With your support, Mennonite Church Canada Witness workers, Vic & Kathy Thiessen, provide leadership for the centre.

August 15, 2004

Rod & Kathi Suderman, Mennonite Church Canada Witness workers with China Educational Exchange, are the resource people for the China Mission Festival hosted by the Saskatchewan Valley Churches this weekend. Please pray for a good connection & learning experience between the congregations and the ministry in China, making the lives and everyday struggles of the Chinese people real.

Jake & Dorothy Unrau are providing pastoral leadership to the congregation in Niedergoersdorf, Germany. This congregation also works with a community run job creation program, and a number of social service activities. Together with you, Mennonite Church Canada Witness is able to assist this congregation in its community outreach.
August 22, 2004 Just over a year ago, at the Mennonite World Conference in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, women from Latin America learned about and met with the Africa women theologians. Stemming from this meeting of minds, a women’s theology group is developing in Central America. Pray with thanksgiving for the inspiration and excitement found by these women and that they may spread the joy and love for the gospel throughout the region.

Canadian Mennonite University students Jeremy Martens and Allison Pauls leave shortly for South Korea, under the Mennonite Church Canada Internship Program. They will assist the Korea Anabaptist Center (KAC) in their new English Language teaching program. Mennonite Church Canada Witness supports KAC in their ministries.

August 29, 2004 Publishing Sunday – Please pray for the ministry of Mennonite Publishing Network and its Executive Director, Ron Rempel. Pray for wisdom and enthusiasm for the task of providing published resources that strengthen the vision and mission of the church.

Janet Plenert, executive director of International Ministries with Mennonite Church Canada Witness, and her family will spend the next 3 ½ months in Bogotá, Colombia, where Janet will be continuing her responsibilities while getting to know the Colombia Mennonite Church and the context in which they work. Mennonite Church Canada Witness supports the church financially, assisting with leadership training through the seminary, work with displaced people, educational resources, bookstores, and evangelism.
