Mennonite Publishing Network Offers Rejoice! Online
Complete Version Of The Popular Devotional Now Available For Download
WATERLOO, Ont. and SCOTTDALE, Pa. -- For many Mennonite Church members, the kitchen table and Rejoice!, the daily devotional from Mennonite Publishing Network (MPN), go together. But an experiment conducted over the past two years shows that a growing a number of people are doing their devotions online, using their computers.
“When we put the daily meditations from Rejoice! online, we didn’t know how many people would use it,” says Eleanor Snyder, who directs the Faith and Life Resources imprint for MPN. “We were pleasantly surprised by the results.”
Site statistics show that the meditations, which were made available for free on the Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite Church Canada websites, were being viewed about 6,000 times a month this past fall. Circulation of the paper version is about 13,000.
The high number of visits shows that people are doing devotions in a variety of places and times,” says Snyder.
To serve this growing demand, MPN has decided to offer the full version of the devotional online for $4.99 U.S./$5.21 Cdn per quarter, a savings of $2.16 U.S./$2.26 Cdn over the paper version. The full version includes the meditations, prayer requests and other inspirational stories and poems.
Some people who were using the free version might be surprised to find that they now need to pay for the online devotional, acknowledges Rejoice! editor Byron Rempel-Burkholder.
“We hope they understand that if they want to have a high-quality devotional from an Anabaptist perspective, we need to cover the cost of good writing, editing and design,” he says, adding that “we have decided to go this route instead of asking people for donations, as happens with other online devotionals.”
Sponsored by the Mennonite Church and the Mennonite Brethren Church, and offered in two editions—one for each group—Rejoice! offers a daily devotional that contains a Bible verse, thoughtful message and a prayer of response based on lectionary texts and texts from the Adult Bible Study’s Uniform Lesson Series, together with edition-specific prayer requests for church workers and organizations from each denomination.
The new online version is currently available only in the Mennonite Church edition.
