Dear Prime Minister Chretien:
It is with deep sadness that Mennonite Church Canada joins with all Canadians
and Americans as we mourn the tragedy experienced by the people of the United
States on September 11, 2001
As a peace church, and followers of Jesus Christ, we voice our deep concern
that the language and response of war, and the search for revenge not become the
driving force of short-term actions that perpetrate more violence.
As a national church representing some 65,000 Canadians, we ask you to consider
the following concerns as you move to take actions against further terrorism:
- We are concerned for peace-loving persons of non-North American cultures who
will become targets of domestic revenge merely by cultural or religious association.
Let us not identify them with the actions of perpetrators who do not represent
a nation or a people.
- We are concerned that a democratic society faces the threat of an enemy. Let
us not allow that threat extend beyond our own values of due process, justice,
and fairness.
- We are concerned when criminal actions are labeled as war. Let us not allow
the rule of law and accountability to be overpowered by the need for retribution.
- Join us in appealing to the news media. Their influence in our society is
great. We can urge them to prominently feature the voices of tolerance and peace
in newspapers and broadcast reports.
- Encourage the United States to channel its responses through the United Nations.
We urge all world leaders not to further validate terrorist actions; rather, play
a vital role in seeking lasting solutions for peace and stability in the world.
- That the position of the Canadian government toward refugees and immigration
remain under Canadian jurisdiction, and not fall to pressures of uniformity with
new immigration policies of the United States.
The horror and shock of these events have moved the world and affected all
of our lives. We express our continued prayers and support for:
- The American people - and especially for all who are suffering and missing
loved ones.
- All those involved in tireless and dangerous relief efforts, for their safety
and strength.
- For a nation, shaken and made vulnerable, as it grieves and arises from numbness
to face questions of its response.
- Our world leaders, that they may lay aside political rhetoric and loyalties,
and truly work toward peaceful resolution of this and all future conflicts.
Together, we can be part of a larger voice that seeks greater wisdom in these
days.
May Gods peace be with us all,
Dan Nighswander, general secretary
Mennonite Church Canada
