EXHIBITION OPENING

Friday, October 11, 7:30PM

comfort - Where do you find it? In the teachings of Christ and the apostles, in God's nature, in the love of family, in standing up for what is just?
discomfort - What causes it? War, terrorism, stress, ill health, injustice, faltering faith?

This was how our call to artists began not long after the events of last September 11. It seemed many of us in this part of the world, not used to living with uncertainty and fear, were experiencing a large degree of discomfort and were as a result searching for comfort. We felt it would be interesting, perhaps useful, even enlightening, to prompt an exhibition that asked artists to think beyond September 11 to what else makes us uncomfortable and where and how we deal with or take refuge from stress and pain. We hoped some artists would touch on the recent events in the US and others would go in other directions, not belittling the horror and tragedy of that day but to reveal that people and individuals deal with horrors large and small and search for comfort everyday and all around the world. Come to the opening, meet many of the artists and find out whether you'll leave comforted or not.

(dis)comfort level features the work of 24 artists from Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec. It runs until January 11, 2003. Special thanks to juror Karen Cornelius.
