International Debt Cancellation

There is a global movement, called Jubilee 2000, which is calling for the cancellation of the unpayable debt of the world’s poorest countries. This call is couched in a vision of the Biblical Jubilee (Leviticus 25), which calls for the periodic cancellation of debt, redistribution of wealth and renewal of creation.

The Mennonite Church Canada is a co-sponsor of the Canadian Ecumenical Jubilee Initiative, which is seeking to educate about the Jubilee, to educate about international debt, and to effect policies to cancel this debt. A Jubilee petition, calling for the cancellation of the backlog of unpayable debt from the most impoverished nation, is being circulated and will be presented to the leaders of the G-8 countries in June, 1999.
