Art for Earthquake Relief
This exhibit first graced the Mennonite Heritage Centre Art Gallery for two months beginning on July 18, 2002 and then toured elsewhere in Canada and the US. The tour is now finished. The pieces on our website are being offered for sale with proceeds going to the aid of the victims and survivors of the devastating earthquake that occurred in the Yogyakarta area on May 27, 2006. The art and artists primarily come from this area. For more information or to arrange a viewing, call 204-888-6781 (local) or 1-866-888-6785 (toll free from Canada and the continental USA) and ask for the Art Gallery, or email the
gallery. Dimensions of artworks are
in imperial units (inches). Watch this page for future updates.
*100% of sales will go to Indonesia - 50% through the Mennonite Central Committee to the broader relief effort and 50% directly to the artists and their families in the earthquake area.
contemporary art from Indonesia
OPENED, Thursday, July 18, 2002 7:30PM
31 artists from across Indonesia are participating in this exhibit. It is a
rare opportunity to look into the heart of a vast, complex country. The idea of
an exhibit was suggested by Abang Rahino, an Indonesian Mennonite who happens
to be the son of one of the most influential Indonesian artists of the 20th Century,
Sudjojono. While I was in Indonesia last year for the Our Family exhibition project
Rahino used his fathers name to open the doors of leading members of the
Indonesian arts community in Jakarta and Yogyakarta. As a result, it was decided
to bring together an exhibition focusing on Indonesian diversity through contemporary
art. Included in the exhibit only during the Winnipeg stop, until October 5, are
two spectacular carvings by Mennonite master carver Taman Petra. The carvings
were commissioned for the Our Family project, a worldwide exhibition to open at
the next global assembly of Mennonite World Conference in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe in
August 2003.
The opening in Winnipeg will include a brief slide presentation at 8:30PM.
A cultural event co-sponsored by the Indonesian Consulate in Toronto will take
place on Friday, September 20. Look for more details in early September.
The exhibit begins a North American tour after it closes in Winnipeg with a
stop in Teaneck, New Jersey, a suburb of New York City.

Indonesia, a giant archipelago; a 5,000 kilometer long chain of islands sweeping
through southeast Asia; a wondrous mixture of history, cultures, traditions and
religions; the fourth most populous country on earth; the largest predominantly
Muslim country in the world.
Art, from across the country; from Sumatra to Java to Bali to Maluku to Kalimantan
to Timor; radiating out of the cultural hub, Yogyakarta; revealing the diversity,
cultures and thought of modern Indonesia.
Volcanoes; over 120 on the island of Java alone; more than 30 still active;
people in the shadows of volcanoes, real and manmade, in a complex sometimes troubled
nation.
In the Shadows of Volcanoes reveals modern Indonesia through the talents of
more than 30 contemporary artists. Ancient Hindu and Buddhist traditions mix with
current Muslim preeminence and significant Christian and other communities to
create a country unlike any other in the world. In the Shadows of Volcanoes celebrates
artistic freedom in Indonesia and the nations spectacular diversity. The
artists speak for peace and equality for all religions and cultures. The art challenges
viewers, sometimes disturbs, but ultimately offers hope for the land the artists
love, their beloved and beautiful Indonesia.
