The Goshen Conference on Religion and Science was established as a yearly conference to explore ways of bridging the often-perceived gap between religion and science. Each year the conference features one primary speaker who presents lectures and also interacts in dialogue with conference participants. It is the intention of conference organizers to publish a full record of the proceedings of each conference, including the more informal exchanges between presenter and participants.

The first Goshen Conference on Religion and Science took place in April, 2001, with Nancey Murphy as its keynote speaker. Dr. Murphy presented three public lectures at Goshen College, dealing with human identity, the concept of a moral basis for the universe, and evolution, respectively. Three discussion sessions followed the lectures. These concentrated on physicalism, the embodiment of humans, and prayer related to God's action. This volume contains the full conference proceedings, edited by Goshen College professor of physics, Carl S. Helrich. The informal, oral nature of the presentations and exchanges have been kept. Readers will find the material accessible and thought-provoking.
